Project Measure Up

Who:

Kinesiology students, physical therapy students, physical education students, Senior Citizen groups, Social Service groups, nurses, student groups, and individuals interested in supporting school districts throughout Bexar County can become a Project Measure Up Volunteer! Volunteers will:

  • Receive hands-on skills in a physical education class environment.
  • Earn community volunteer hours for themselves and/or their organization.
  • Do something good for children in the community.
  • Complete internship requirements.
  • Receive free CPR and first aid training (paid for by the Health Collaborative, Project Measure Up).
  • Support kids and families in leading healthier lifestyles.
  • Help local schools meet a State requirement by donating time.

What:

As a Project Measure Up Volunteer Corps Member, you will work closely with key staff at schools throughout Bexar County to conduct the State-mandated FitnessGram physical fitness assessment to students in grades 3-12.

As a PMU Volunteer, you will receive the appropriate FitnessGram training needed to conduct the fitness assessments. One training session must be completed prior to volunteer service.

Training Session Dates:

Tuesday, September 14, 2010   
Tuesday, October 19, 2010  
Tuesday, November 16, 2010  
Tuesday, February 8, 2011   
Tuesday, March 8, 2011  

Sessions will begin at 9 a.m. and will conclude by 2 p.m.

Where:

All FitnessGram training sessions will take place at the YMCA located at: TriPoint Family YMCA 3233 N. St. Mary’s San Antonio, TX 78212. Phone: (210) 246-9622. Please do not show up to a training session until you have registered.

Requirements:

A strong willingness and desire to support school districts and youth throughout schools in Bexar County beginning in September 2010 though the end of the school year in early June 2011.

Given the physical requirements needed to master the FitnessGram training, and conduct the FitnessGram activity test, volunteers must be able to bend, walk and move with ease and agility. Volunteers should be comfortable counting, using a stop watch, measuring distances and speaking to groups of youth, between the ages of 8 to18. Please dress in comfortable clothing and tennis shoes.

A volunteer profile sheet must be submitted prior to attending a training session to become a PMU Volunteer.

The mission of Project Measure Up is to raise awareness of the prevalence of youth obesity in Bexar County and the related community prevention programs and facilitating and advocating for activities and policies focused on youth obesity prevention and reduction.
