The Public Grand Rounds, co-sponsored the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the University of North Carolina, focused on the issue of obesity, and the city of San Antonio was highlighted. The broadcast featured two Health Collaborative board members and the executive director.
The San Antonio Business Journal named the Health Collaborative as one of its first “Health Care Heroes,” an honor bestowed upon 12 people or organizations that are helping San Antonio residents live longer, better and healthier lives.
The Texas Department of Health named Joan Miller, executive director of The Health Collaborative, as co-chairman of the obesity work group as part of Commissioner Eduardo Sanchez's Texas State Strategic Health Partnership.
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Health Task Force conducted a conference on obesity in San Antonio on April 2003. The Health Collaborative was invited to make a presentation on the success of its initiatives, particularly healthy vending and Walk San Antonio.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cited The Health Collaborative in its “Making It Happen: School Nutrition Success Stories,” part of the CDC’s “Healthy Youth” initiative. Described as a successful community-based coalition, The Health Collaborative was cited for its healthy vending criteria developed as part of Fit City/Fit Schools.
The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) recognized the hospital systems that are members of The Health Collaborative for working together to provide healthier food in vending machines. Healthy Food, Healthy Hospitals, Healthy Communities: Stories of Health Care Leaders, a publication of the IATP, included a case study on the healthy vending initiative of The Health Collaborative and credited the hospital systems for their leadership.
The Health Collaborative has been recognized as a Texas coalition leading the way to a healthier, more active state on a new Web site developed by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The site, “Eat Smart, Be Active”, is a clearinghouse for tools, resources, and evidence-based approaches to healthy eating and physical activity in Texas communities.
Duke Corporate Education, an off-shoot of Duke University, featured The Health Collaborative in a case study on community collaborations that they produced for 2,000 Pricewaterhousecoopers partners. They filmed interviews with past and present board members and staff.
The Health Collaborative was invited to present a case study on the success of the program at the Institute of Medicine childhood obesity summit.
