BRFSS

Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey

Introduction & Purpose
In 2009, the Bexar County Health Collaborative, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, and Bexar County’s Department of Community Resources collaborated to fund an oversample of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey for Bexar County to gain insight into health issues affecting local residents.

Methodology
Established in 1984 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is a state‐based system of health surveys that collects information on health risk behaviors, preventive health practices, and health care access primarily related to chronic disease and injury. It is the largest continuously collected health survey in the world. Analysis of the data was completed by researchers at the Center for Community Health Development (CCHD), Texas A&M School of Rural Public Health.
